Jimmy Fund Clinic Patients Sign the Pesky Pole - In a Quilt That Is!

June 21, 2010

Boston, MA - Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. to Donate Red Sox Inspired Quilt to the Jimmy Fund. Volunteers from Wrapped Up In Sports, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to making, collecting, and donating professional sports team-inspired quilts for children in medical, social and mental-health need, made a special trip to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund Clinic with a special keepsake in hand. A volunteer quilter hand-made a Red Sox inspired wall hanging quilt that was autographed by members of the 2010 Boston Red Sox. The wall hanging, which has a replica of Fenway Park and both the Pesky and Fisk Foul Pole will be put up for auction on eBay during the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon’s Extra Innings Auction to take place at the end of July.

The wall hanging did not seem complete with nearly blank Pesky and Fisk Poles, soWrapped Up in Sports, Inc. President and Founder, Kate McCullough, decided to have patients and their parents from the Jimmy Fund Clinic sign their names and inspirational messages on the yellow fabric adjacent to the signatures of fan favorites like Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, and more. “It was the perfect touch to make this wall hanging truly special.”, says Kate McCullough.

Donating this wall hanging to the Jimmy Fund to auction has special meaning for those involved in Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. During the summer of 2008, Kate McCullough tuned into the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon and was so inspired by the stories that the Jimmy Fund clinic patients told not just of their treatment, but also of the great activities Dana-Farber Cancer Institute provides for them to take their mind off of their disease. McCullough could see that when talking about their trips to Ft. Myers for Spring Training or having visits with professional athletes, their eyes widened, the tone of their voices perked up, and they smiled from ear to ear. This inspired Kate to start Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. so that kids all over New England could feel connected to their beloved sports teams and feel comforted by the love put into these hand-made team-inspired quilts. "We feel it is necessary to give back to the cause that inspired the start of our organization.”, says McCullough, “The Jimmy Fund Clinic provides smiles and hope for kids with cancer and we are grateful for the opportunity to help keep that spirit going!"

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of this quilt will be donated to the Patient Activities Fund in the Jimmy Fund Clinic to help create positive experiences for pediatric patients.

Lisa Scherber, Patient Activities Coordinator in the Jimmy Fund Clinic says, “The funds that will be raised with this project will be used for a different type of medicine. The activities and events that happen with these funds will help these kids to get to their next treatment, by making them feel safe and happy.” You can bid on this one-of-a-kind Red Sox team autographed wall hanging along with an autographed New England Patriots wall hanging on eBay in July.

Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. thanks the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots for their participation in this project. To learn more, please visit www.wrappedupinsports.org or contact Kate McCullough at (857) 891-1612 or kate@wrappedupinsports.org.

Wrapped Up In Sports, Inc. Benefits From the Handy-Work of Girl Scout Troop
of Beachwood, New Jersey

May 6, 2010

Beachwood, NJ - Young Girls Learn the Art of Quilting and the Importance of Helping the Community. Eight girls from a Girl Scouts Troop in Beachwood, NJ held a quilting workshop at Troop Leader, Sara Crawford’s house this past Saturday. These were not just any quilts though; they were Boston Celtics quilt tops, which will be completed later by Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc., a non-profit organization in Massachusetts dedicated to making, collecting, and donating professional sports team-inspired quilts for children in medical, social and mental-health need. Once completed, these eight quilts will be included in one of two upcoming donations this fall to organizations in New England.

“The girls had so much fun and can’t wait to do it again!” says Pat McCullough, a member of the Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc.’s Board of Directors, who was there to teach the girls the art of quilting, “It’s nice to see our vision of kids helping kids start to come to fruition”. In fact, Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. is hoping to launch the their “Kids Helping Kids” program in the next year, which is a program that will provide sewing and quilting classes for kids and young adults in Boston's inner-city community. The classes, which will be a free indoor recreational activity, will teach the art of quilting and encourage youth to creatively express themselves using the inspiration of Boston sports to make quilts that are not only team-spirited, but will also be donated to a child in need.

“Words can’t express how excited we are to receive this donation that was so lovingly made for kids by kids!” says Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc.’s Founder and President, Kate McCullough. To show their appreciation, Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. will award each Girl Scout with a Certificate of Participation

Wrapped Up in Sports Gaining Support to Participate
in the 9th Annual WEEI / NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon

Roxbury, MA - 35 Children Living In Shelter Receive Hand-Made Quilts Volunteers from Wrapped Up In Sports, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to making, collecting, and donating professional sports team-inspired quilts for children in medical, social and mental-health need, made a special delivery this past Monday, to the Elizabeth Stone House, a domestic violence shelter in Roxbury, MA.

The kids, grateful for their new quilts, were running around the play room showing off their quilts to each other, posing for the camera with pride, and adorning themselves with either a Red Sox, Celtics, or Patriots inspired quilt.

Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. volunteers were thrilled to make this quilt donation to such deserving kids. “The Elizabeth Stone House is a wonderful organization, and we really enjoyed meeting the staff, the mothers, and of course, playing with the kids while handing out the quilts”, says President and Founder of Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc., Kate McCullough. “Each child has received their own unique quilt, and I hope that makes them feel a little bit more special today”.

The Elizabeth Stone House dedicates each day to providing a safe and happy environment for mothers and their children who are victims of domestic violence. The ability to give the kids something they can call their own and use in whatever capacity they wish, is vital. “What’s great about the Wrapped Up in Sports, Inc. quilts is that it gives the kids the opportunity to have pride of ownership. If they want to sleep with it, have snack-time on it, or even hide under it, they can because it’s theirs” says Amanda Green, Development and Community Relations Coordinator for the Elizabeth Stone House. “Every day we tell the kids they are special and that people outside of Elizabeth Stone House care about them too. To have quilts donated that were lovingly hand-made just for them proves this in a way that we never could.”

This donation would not have been possible without the handmade quilt-work of Mary Derosiers and Linda Smith of Bridgewater, MA, Debbie Zeida of East Falmouth, MA, Belknap Mill Quilt Guild of Laconia, NH, Beachplum Quilters of Beachwood, NJ, and members of the New England Quilt Museum of Lowell, MA.

Wrapped Up in Sports and Terry Francona Bring Warmth
and Team Spirit to  Children’s Hospital Boston for the Holidays

December 22, 2009

Boston, MA – Wrapped Up in Sports teamed up with Boston Red Sox Manager, Terry Francona and donated 49 Red Sox quilts to Children’s Hospital Boston for the holidays.

The organization rallied support from quilt guilds and individual quilters spanning from New Jersey to New Hampshire.

Organizations and individual quilters involved in the donation are members of Wrapped Up in Sports; The Beachplum Quilters Guild of Toms River, NJ; The Belknap Mill Quilters Guild of New Hampshire; The New England Quilt Museum; The Maria Weston Chapman Middle School of Weymouth, MA; Mary Desrosiers of Raynham, MA.

“This was a really exciting opportunity for Wrapped Up in Sports”, says the organization’s Founder and President, Kate McCullough.  “To successfully complete our first donation to a medical center as large as Children’s Hospital alongside a public figure like Terry Francona is extremely fulfilling.  We have received positive and heartfelt gratitude from Terry, the hospital administration, and most importantly the patients and their families.  It proves our cause is worthwhile, and it motivates us to begin our projects for the next year.  I really hope the kids find comfort in them when needed, but can also enjoy them and have a lot of fun with them.   That is the purpose of our cause”.

This is the first major quilt donation Wrapped Up in Sports has coordinated since its inception in late 2009.  The organization, which rallies support from quilt guilds and volunteer quilters throughout New England is currently collaborating with other New England programs that house and assist children in need to coordinate its projects for 2010.
